Canadian Literary Association of Higher EducationCanadian Literary Association of Higher Education (CLAHE), also known as the “Literary Society,” is a non-profit organization federally registered in Canada. The Association is dedicated to providing a pure literary exchange platform for literature enthusiasts from various universities who share a Chinese cultural background. Through diverse activities, it brings people together through literature, encourages mutual learning, and helps members improve their literary accomplishment. Within the framework of its constitution, the Association actively carries out a wide range of literature-related public welfare activities, while also using literature and the arts to promote, support, and organize various community service initiatives.CLAHE is guided by the values of care and innovation; honesty and gratitude; integrity and kindness; equality and respect; inclusiveness and humility. Upholding the principle that character takes precedence, the Association seeks to elevate literary quality, initiate and guide all of its activities with integrity, and, through literature and the arts, support and organize a wide range of community-based public welfare initiatives. Background and DevelopmentCLAHE was initiated in the autumn of 2015 at a joint meeting of alumni associations from 46 Chinese universities in Toronto. The proposal was put forward by Mr. Yang Haijun (pen name: Yuanye), Founding President of the Xi’an Jiaotong University Toronto Alumni Association, together with the presidents of several other university alumni associations. The Association was first established in the form of a WeChat literary community and was officially registered in September 2020.Since its founding, CLAHE has attracted literature lovers from more than one hundred universities and colleges in China and abroad. It currently has more than 500 registered members. WeChat serves as its primary platform for communication, while online publishing tools such as Meipian are used as creative platforms. A volunteer team of moderators drawn from among members proposes a weekly theme, around which members create and contribute their works. These are then compiled and published as a public Weekly Collection.Signature ProgramsWeekly Themed WritingWeekly themed writing is the Association’s most distinctive and representative program. Members write continuously on weekly themes in a wide variety of forms, including classical poetry, modern verse, prose, essays, and flash fiction. Their works are diverse in style and rich in expression, appealing to both refined and general audiences alike. Within a warm and constructive atmosphere, members grow together through reading, appreciation, commentary, and thoughtful discussion.Special LecturesCLAHE also organizes special lecture series and promotes literary and cultural programming through its official WeChat public account. In principle, the Association invites scholars, writers, and professionals from within and beyond its membership to deliver free online lectures every two weeks. Topics cover poetry, prose, fiction, translation, law, philosophy, music, traditional theatre, painting, photography, calligraphy, architecture, and other subjects related to literature and the arts. These lectures broaden horizons, inspire creative thinking, and cultivate artistic appreciation.Essay Competitions and PublicationsCLAHE’s members come from a wide range of institutions and maintain close ties with numerous university alumni associations across Canada, giving the Association a distinctive and deeply rooted alumni spirit.Beginning with the Second Joint Spring Festival Gala of Chinese Universities, CLAHE was entrusted by the organizers to undertake the essay competitions for six consecutive gala events, hosted respectively by Tsinghua University, Peking University, the Wuhan Three Universities, the Six-University Alliance, the Shanghai Six-University Alliance, and Zhejiang-affiliated institutions. Outstanding submissions were compiled and published in the following collections:

These themed essay and publication initiatives have made meaningful contributions to the solidarity and development of the university alumni community, and the Association’s public-service publishing efforts have become one of the community’s notable highlights.
In 2021, commissioned by a related organization, CLAHE successfully organized the themed essay initiative Facing the Pandemic, Embracing Tomorrow, and published a collection of outstanding documentary writings. With delicate and sincere writing, contributors vividly recorded the moving stories of overseas Chinese communities standing together in solidarity during the pandemic. Through the power of literature, these works inspired hope and documented the extraordinary lives of ordinary people in an extraordinary time.
In 2022, to celebrate the seventh anniversary of the Association, entrepreneur Mr. Feng Jiande and Frontop Engineering Limited sponsored the publication of the special anthology My Journey with Literature.
In 2023 and 2024, CLAHE, together with the Canada-China Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Association, jointly planned and organized the first and second Zhou Jiancheng • T.Q.C Architecture Canada “University Cup” Global Essay Competitions, under the themes My Youth, My Dream and New Homeland, New Life. Both were published in book form and received wide public attention and strong acclaim. These memorable and inspiring works will continue to encourage overseas Chinese and future generations to pursue their dreams with resilience and passion.
To date, the Association has also supported the publication of members’ individual works, including the novel Officialdom and the prose collections Northern Star Shining in the West and The Years, all of which have resonated widely with readers and received warm praise.
In 2025, CLAHE celebrated its 10th anniversary with the formal publication of the richly illustrated Commemorative Album for the 10th Anniversary of the Canadian Literary Association of Higher Education. This volume offers a detailed record of the Association’s remarkable achievements over the past decade, reflecting its perseverance, dedication, and steady growth.
